Target Group

Low-income families

Challenge

Lack of awareness about sustainability challenges along the food value chain; lack of guidance on how to cook sustainable meals (e.g., vegetarian) and food surplus.

Intervention

The “Farm to Fork” family’s program will aim to facilitate and increase the consumption of fresh and nutritious food among 40-50 low-income families in the Lisbon area through a three-step approach:
1) Visiting farms, connecting with farmers and learning about sustainable production methods (five trips).
2) Visiting a large wholesale market, connecting with sellers and learning about food surplus challenges (five trips).
3) Cooking classes/workshops in food banks premises, learning how to cook fresh food products and food surplus (five cooking classes).

Expected Impact

Environmental: Food loss reduction (farm level); food waste reduction (retail and household level); GHG emissions reduction through a focus on plant-based meals.

Social: Food security and food safety; desirability and availability; healthy diets and improved nutrition; food literacy; social and community cohesion; social protection.

Economic: Resilient short food supply chains; fair pricing/just remuneration; sustainable livelihoods/community welfare; economic savings through food waste reduction.
